Force Units Explained
Force is a vector quantity defined by Newton's second law: F = m × a. The SI unit of force is the Newton (N), defined as the force needed to accelerate 1 kg at 1 m/s².
- Newton (N) — SI unit. The weight of a 100 g apple is about 1 N.
- Kilonewton (kN) — 1,000 N. Structural loads, cable tensions.
- Meganewton (MN) — 1,000,000 N. Rocket thrust, large bridges.
- Dyne (dyn) — CGS unit. 1 dyn = 10⁻⁵ N. Used in surface tension measurements.
- Kilogram-force (kgf) — force of gravity on 1 kg mass: 9.80665 N. Common in engineering specs.
- Gram-force (gf) — 0.00980665 N. Delicate measurements.
- Pound-force (lbf) — 4.44822 N. Common in US engineering.

Weight of a 70 kg person in Newtons
F = m × g = 70 × 9.80665 = 686.5 N = 70 kgf.
